From left to right in the picture are: Veronica Gonzalez, Abril Carrillo, Tina Esparza, Fabiola Garibay, Oscar Morales, and Jose Garcia (Instructor and Language Services Manager) This is the group of bilingual employees currently taking the Connecting Worlds Training for Healthcare Interpreters; completion of the training is schedule for May 2, 2008. Also participating in NIH Language Services Program, not in the picture or that already completed this training, are: Crystal Parra, Eva Judson, Kathryn Erickson, Megan Shumway, and Veronica Hernandez.
The Connecting Worlds curriculum, funded by The California Endowment, is an introduction to health care interpreting that combines a variety of teaching methods and materials, including lectures, videos, large group discussions, small group activities, role-plays, research and homework. The development of the curriculum involved a statewide collaboration with Asian Health Services, Clnicas de Salud del Pueblo, Healthy House and PALS for Health. The Connecting Worlds training provides bilingual participants an introduction to the theory, concepts, and skills associated with health care interpreting; an appreciation for the complexities of the roles and responsibilities of interpreters in the health care setting; and the skills required to carry out those functions. Participants also have the opportunities to apply concepts and theory through simulated interpreting sessions and scenarios on challenging situations and learn medical terminology (specifically anatomy and physiology and HIV/AIDS terminology).
