Why Back-to-School Checkups Are Important for Kids

This annual visit does more than just give you a chance to get school forms signed.
As summer winds down, many parents start thinking about school supplies, new clothes and changes in schedules. But there's one important task that should also be on the back-to-school checklist: scheduling a checkup with your child's doctor. These yearly visits help make sure your child is healthy, growing well and ready to start the school year strong.
Back-to-school checkups are a chance to catch small health concerns before they become bigger problems. They also give parents time to ask questions about their child's physical health, emotional well-being and development.
What to Expect During Back-to-School Checkups
During these appointments, your child's healthcare provider will usually check height, weight, blood pressure and heart rate.
They may also test vision and hearing. These screenings are important because kids don't always realize that they're having trouble seeing the board at school or hearing the teacher clearly. Problems like these can affect learning, behavior and confidence in the classroom.
The doctor will also review your child's vaccination records. Many schools require certain vaccines before students can attend classes. Staying up to date on immunizations helps protect your child and others from serious illnesses like measles, whooping cough and meningitis.
Back-to-school checkups are also important for tracking growth and development. Doctors look at how children are growing compared to previous years and whether they're meeting developmental milestones. For older kids and teens, the visit may include conversations about puberty, sleep habits, mental health, stress and nutrition.
If your child plans to play sports, the doctor may perform a sports physical during the same visit. This helps make sure your child is healthy enough for physical activity and can safely participate in sports practices and games.
These visits are also a good time to talk about everyday habits that affect your child's physical and mental health. The doctor may discuss topics like healthy eating habits, getting enough sleep and physical activity, managing anxiety or stress, screen time limits and staying safe online and at school.
Scheduling and Preparing for Appointments
Try to schedule back-to-school checkups early if possible. Many pediatric offices become very busy in late summer as families rush to complete physicals and vaccine requirements before school starts.
Sometimes parents don't think about scheduling checkups because their child seems healthy. But many health issues don't cause obvious symptoms right away and annual visits help doctors spot concerns early, when they may be easier to treat.
Preparing for the appointment can help things go more smoothly. Before the visit, gather any school forms that need to be completed. Bring your child's medication list, including vitamins or supplements. It can also help to write down questions ahead of time so you don't forget anything you want to discuss during the appointment.
If your child feels nervous about seeing the doctor, talk positively about the visit beforehand. Explain that the doctor is there to help keep them healthy and strong and answer any questions they may have so they know what to expect.
