Living and Working in Bishop

Bishop is home to families who have lived here for generations, newcomers drawn to the Eastern Sierra, and visitors from around the world. Its small size makes it easier to get involved, build relationships, and see the difference your work makes.

The city has independent shops, restaurants, parks, and gathering places. Community events, school activities, youth sports, local arts, and seasonal celebrations bring people together year-round.

For healthcare professionals, Bishop offers the opportunity to build a meaningful career while becoming part of the community you serve.

Beyond Bishop: Inyo County and the Eastern Sierra

Bishop is NIHD’s home, but the community we serve extends well beyond the city. Inyo County includes small towns and rural communities throughout the Owens Valley, including Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine, and Olancha, as well as more remote communities across the county.

The Eastern Sierra connects these communities through a shared landscape and rural way of life. Schools, Tribal Nations, businesses, community organizations, and public agencies regularly work together to meet the needs of the people who live here.

Inyo County is home to some of the country’s most geographically distinctive landscapes and historic places, including Mount Whitney, Death Valley National Park, the Alabama Hills, the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, and Manzanar National Historic Site. Farther north, the Eastern Sierra continues into Mono County, with Mammoth Lakes, Mono Lake, and additional opportunities for year-round recreation.

Working at NIHD means caring for people who live, work, and travel throughout this region. It also means joining a community that understands how important it is to keep quality healthcare available close to home.

Recreation Just Outside Your Door

Outdoor recreation is part of everyday life in the Eastern Sierra. Depending on the season, you can hike, fish, climb, cycle, camp, ski, snowboard, or spend time outside with family and friends.

The Bishop area is especially well known for rock climbing and bouldering. Residents also enjoy walking, photography, wildlife viewing, and stargazing in quieter places close to town.

Inyo County covers more than 10,000 square miles, making it California’s second-largest county by area. About 19,000 people call the county home. It includes Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous United States at 14,505 feet, and Badwater Basin, 282 feet below sea level.

Schools and Family Life

Bishop students can attend local public schools from elementary through high school, including Bishop Elementary School, Home Street Middle School, Bishop Union High School, and Palisade Glacier High School. NIHD supports health clinics at both high schools.

Smaller school districts serve families in Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine, and Round Valley. Cerro Coso Community College also offers college courses and career training in Bishop.

Families will find preschool programs, youth sports, recreation, and other activities throughout the area. Community groups and Tribal organizations provide additional programs and support for children and parents.

Our Region’s Indigenous History and Culture

Bishop is located in the ancestral homeland of the Nüümü, the original people of the Owens Valley. The Bishop Paiute Tribe is a sovereign Tribal Nation and an important part of the Bishop community. Tribal members continue to preserve and share their culture, traditions, and longstanding connection to the land and water of the Owens Valley.

The Owens Valley is also home to several other sovereign Tribal Nations, each with its own government, community, and traditions.

The Owens Valley Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center in Bishop allows residents and visitors to learn about the histories, cultures, and continuing traditions of the Indigenous peoples of the Owens Valley.

The Eastern Sierra’s identity has also been shaped by ranching, agriculture, conservation, recreation, and the experiences of generations of people who have called this region home.

Healthcare Close to Home

Northern Inyo Healthcare District is one of Inyo County’s largest employers and an important part of the region’s healthcare system. NIHD provides a full-service critical access hospital, 24-hour emergency care, primary and specialty care, diagnostic services, surgery, rehabilitation, women’s health, pediatrics, and other essential services.

Working at NIHD means caring for neighbors, friends, and families from across the region. Our employees work closely across departments, support one another, and share a commitment to keeping quality healthcare available in the Eastern Sierra.

Working Together Across the Eastern Sierra

Caring for a rural region is a shared effort. NIHD works alongside other healthcare providers, Tribal health organizations, emergency medical services, public health agencies, and community partners throughout Inyo and Mono counties.

These relationships help patients receive coordinated care, connect with specialty services, and move safely between levels of care when needed. They also create opportunities to share knowledge, strengthen local programs, and find practical solutions to the challenges of providing healthcare across a large and rural area.

For NIHD employees, this means being part of a community of professionals who know one another, work together, and share a commitment to serving the Eastern Sierra.
