About Thomas
In his 29 years of ophthalmology experience, Dr. Reid has performed more than 18,000 eye, eyelid, and orbital surgeries, including cataracts, refractive lens implants, glaucoma and retinal detachment repairs, cosmetic and functional eyelid surgeries, and LASER treatments for diabetes, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other conditions. His patients have included other physicians, professionals, artists, and photographers. He has taught courses on cataract surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology meeting as well as appearing on local TV and writing articles for the local newspapers. Dr. Reid is board certified in Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Surgery.
Born in Oklahoma, Dr. Reid graduated 1st in his class from Oklahoma State University in Biochemistry with highest honors. He earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He studied Neuro-ophthalmology, Ocular Pathology, Retina, and General Ophthalmology at The Wilmer Eye Institute (often rated as the best eye institute in the world). He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Arizona serving as Chief Resident in 1994 and 1995.
Dr. Reid started practicing ophthalmology in Bishop in July, 1995 and raised his four children here. He moved here because of the mountains and skiing opportunities and stays very busy with ophthalmology as well as with his family, skiing, bicycling and hiking. He has served as Chief of Surgery for three years at Northern Inyo Hospital.
Northern Inyo Hospital has provided state of the art LASER and phacoemulsification equipment for Dr. Reid, better than most hospitals in large cities. Dr. Reid’s office also has the most advanced equipment, including Zeiss Ocular Coherence Tomography, fluorescein angiography, digital imaging, YAG LASER, and microscopes. Dr. Reid performs state of the art surgery including small incision/no-stitch cataract surgery with multifocal lens implants and implantable contact lenses. He was one of the first surgeons in California to be certified to use the implantable contact lens.
