Retired Orthopedic surgeon John A. Ungersma, MD, represents Zone I on the NIHD Board of Directors.
Dr. Ungersma served as a Naval Flight Surgeon and Senior Surgeon with the First Marine Division in Desert Shield and Desert Storm. His military career spans 48 years, 21 years of active duty and 27 years in active reserve for the Marine Corps as well as the U.S. Navy.
He received his Medical Degree from the University of Southern California and completed his Orthopedic Residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in San Francisco. He was the first Orthopedic Surgeon to establish a practice in Bishop. He has served on the NIHD Board since 2001.
Dr. Ungersma feels his career provided him with strong leadership experiences, making him a valuable contributor to the district board. “I’ve faced and overcome numerous challenges as a healthcare provider in the U.S. Navy,” he said. “Additionally, I feel that having practiced surgery in Bishop for more than two decades has given me a unique insight into meeting the needs of our community. I want to use these experiences to ensure the Healthcare District delivers on its promise to improve our communities, one life at a time.”
Dr. Ungersma has served on the Association of California Healthcare Districts’ Executive Board, serving as Treasurer and Vice President. He was named ACHD’s Trustee of the Year in 2015.
He and his wife, Hilke, live in Bishop.
