Signs & Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Understanding Uterine Fibroids

As women, it’s important to be informed about the conditions which affect our reproductive health. When it comes to uterine fibroids, there are a number of signs and symptoms that you may experience. It's important to be aware of these so that you can get the treatment you need.
Keep reading to learn these telltale signs of uterine fibroids:

What is a Uterine Fibroid?

Fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. They can grow on the outside of the uterus, inside the uterine cavity, or within the muscular wall of the uterus. Fibroids can vary greatly in size; some fibroids can be as small as an apple seed, while others can grow to be as large as a grapefruit.

Common Signs

Uterine fibroids can cause a variety of symptoms depending on their size. The most common symptom of fibroids is heavy bleeding. This commonly happens either during your period or in between periods. You may also have longer periods than usual, or your periods may be more frequent.

Other symptoms include:

  • Pain in the pelvis or lower back
  • Pain during sex
  • Difficulty urinating/emptying your bladder
  • Constipation
  • Bulge in the abdomen
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Frequent urination

It’s important to note that many women with uterine fibroids are asymptomatic — making regular visits to your doctor vital. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to see your doctor so that they can diagnose the problem and recommend treatment.

Treatments Options

Treatment for fibroids may include medication, surgery, or a combination of both. Myomectomy is a type of surgery that removes fibroids while leaving the uterus intact. Hysterectomy is another option, which involves the removal of the entire uterus.

Your doctor will work with you to determine the best treatment option for you based on the severity of your symptoms and other factors. Fibroids don't always require treatment, but it's important to talk to your doctor if you're experiencing any symptoms so that they can determine the best course of action.
