Northern Inyo Healthcare District is pleased to share that Dr. Allison J. Robinson, who provides surgical care right here in Bishop, was appointed to the Board of Directors for the American Board of Surgery (ABS). Her three-year term began July 1, 2025.
Dr. Robinson is one of three new directors joining the national organization, which oversees the certification of general surgeons and surgical specialists across the country. Her appointment brings a strong community-based voice to the national conversation, one shaped by years of service in both rural and military healthcare.
“It’s a privilege to represent community surgeons,” Dr. Robinson said. ““I strive to add value to healthcare as a surgeon in my community and have maintained this commitment while serving on the ABS Council. I look forward to continuing to make meaningful contributions as a representative of community surgeons while on the ABS Board of Directors.”
Dr. Robinson’s path to this national leadership position is both inspiring and deeply rooted in service. A graduate of Whittier College and the Uniformed Services University’s School of Medicine, she served 25 years in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Captain. She was named the Navy’s Top Surgeon from 2007 to 2009, and helped build the colorectal surgery program at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.
After completing a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, Dr. Robinson transitioned to community practice. Today, she splits her time between Northern Inyo Hospital and PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Washington.
Since 2019, Dr. Robinson has served on the ABS Council, helped develop national surgical training standards, and chaired the committee overseeing the General Surgery Certifying Exam.
Her appointment not only honors her personal accomplishments but also highlights the importance of including rural and community-based perspectives in shaping the future of surgery.
“We’re incredibly proud of Dr. Robinson,” said Dr. Adam Hawkins, NIHD’s Chief Medical Officer. “She’s served our country and now serves our community with dedication and compassion. This recognition is well deserved, and we’re excited to see her represent rural healthcare on a national level.”
Dr. Robinson joins Cherodeep Goswami of Providence Health and Dr. Michael F. Rotondo of the University of Rochester Medical Center as new members of the 14-member ABS Board.
